For most dog owners there will come a time when you will travel and can not bring your four legged family member with you. There are many different kinds of boarding facilities available, and it is important to find the right environment for your pet. As you look around there are some questions you should ask before you bring your dog to stay.

Find out where they will be staying. The best way to get an idea of what the environment is like and to see where the dog will be kept is to ask for a tour. Make sure that is it clean and does not smell like dog urine or feces. If they are going to be crated make sure the cages are kept clean as well.

If you don’t like the idea of your dog being caged look in to other options. There are some kennel owners who run them out of their homes and don’t keep the dogs in cages. Check to make sure the areas where the dogs will be is kept clean as well.

Find out what kind of exercise your dog will get. Are the kept crated for most of the day? You want to make sure that they will get regular walks and exercise. Many boarding facilities also offer doggie daycare. These types of kennels can offer your dog all day play with other dogs and are a great way to keep them active while you are gone.

Bringing your own food is often better for your dog since changing their food can cause diarrhea. Find out if you can bring your own before dropping off your pet.

In actuality, a dog’s fur will actually act as a coolant will help keep him cool during the hot weather. Additionally, if you cut his fur off, you run the risk of having him endure sunburn, which is a difficult condition to relieve or cure.

If you have a full-grown dog that weighs less than 20 pounds, he will need more calories than a larger dog. Choose a pet food specially designed for smaller canines to ensure that he is receiving the proper calorie intake. You can ask your veterinarian for recommendations.

If you find that your dog is becoming a picky eater, it may be due to the fact that you are changing his food too often. When you find a food that Fido enjoys, stick with it unless your dog’s vet makes a different recommendation for medical or health reasons.

Keep your dog away from your garden. Many plants such as spinach and tomatoes can be harmful to your pet.

Diseases That Affect Deer.

Deer, as with any wild animal are suceptible to many different diseases. Parasites are the number one cause for sickness and health problems in deer. Deer can contract tape worms, lung worms, and round worms which can cause severe malnutrition and eventually lead to the death of any deer with the parasite if not treated. Three common diseases or illnesses that a deer can contract are brain worms, hemorrhagic diseases, and skin tumors.

Brain worms are round worms that use a deer as a host to complete its life cycle. Round worms are then excreted from the deer in fecal matter. While the round worms are not a threat to the deer, these are a threat to other animals such as moose, elk, and mule deer. The round worms in the fecal matter are transferred to snails and slugs, eaten by other animals and the worms are transferred to another animal when the snails or slugs are eaten.

Hemorrhagic disease is disease that is carried by gnats from one deer to another. hemorrhagic disease also known as “blue-tongue,” is only specific to deer and not found in other animals or humans bitten by the same gnats. Many deer die from this disease, but some do recover. Deer that recover from hemorrhagic disease will build an immunity to the disease at if bitten by an infected gnat again, the disease will not phase them.

Skin tumors on a deer are usually benign and can be located underneath or onto of the skin. The medical term for these skin tumors are fibromas or papilloma and are often non-cancerous. If a deer is shot and these skin tumors are noticed; it doesn’t make the meat inedible. Check the meat thoroughly when processing. If tumors are found on the inside of the deer, such as in the muscle or fatty tissue, this is an indication of cancerous tumors and the deer should not be eaten.
