There are many different kinds of pets to choose from to fit all kinds of lifestyles so it is important to think carefully before you go out to get your pet. Since different kinds of animals require different amounts of care, you need to take into consideration what you are willing to put into your pet.

Before buying a pet think about where you live. Do you have a small space or a large space? If you are considering a dog, do you have a place where they can go outside? If you don’t have an outside space you might want to consider a pet that can stay indoor such as a cat.

Do you have time to spend with your pet? If your time is limited you might want to stay away from dogs. They require a large amount of time, especially in the beginning when they need to be trained. Regular veterinary care is very important to keeping your pet healthy. This included immunizations and preventative medicines. There is also the possibility that they might need emergency care which can be very expensive.

Once you take these things into consideration you can fin the perfect pet for you.

For most dog owners there will come a time when you will travel and can not bring your four legged family member with you. There are many different kinds of boarding facilities available, and it is important to find the right environment for your pet. As you look around there are some questions you should ask before you bring your dog to stay.

Find out where they will be staying. The best way to get an idea of what the environment is like and to see where the dog will be kept is to ask for a tour. Make sure that is it clean and does not smell like dog urine or feces. If they are going to be crated make sure the cages are kept clean as well.

If you don’t like the idea of your dog being caged look in to other options. There are some kennel owners who run them out of their homes and don’t keep the dogs in cages. Check to make sure the areas where the dogs will be is kept clean as well.

Find out what kind of exercise your dog will get. Are the kept crated for most of the day? You want to make sure that they will get regular walks and exercise. Many boarding facilities also offer doggie daycare. These types of kennels can offer your dog all day play with other dogs and are a great way to keep them active while you are gone.

Bringing your own food is often better for your dog since changing their food can cause diarrhea. Find out if you can bring your own before dropping off your pet.

For instance, younger animals will need less protein than adults. Look for food choices that are labeled by age. For instance, choose one labeled puppy for your young canine companion. However, any food you choose should include protein sources such as lamb, beef or chicken. The protein should be the first ingredient on the list of ingredients.

Avoid animal byproducts such as chicken feet and bones that may be included in pet foods. Less expensive foods usually include these types of byproducts. More expensive food generally do not include byproducts. Ask your veterinarian for recommendations about higher-quality byproducts.

Currently, there are many pet-friendly ways of travel and lodging, so there are very few reasons why you need to leave your pet at home. All you need to do is follow a few simple tips to make sure you have the proper accommodations and arranges to travel safely with your pet.

Check with your mode of travel — bus, plane and so on — as to their particular regulations about traveling with pets.

You will need to have a travel crate for your pet. Your pet should be able to completely stand up and turn around in this crate for maximum comfort during travel.

If you are traveling by automobile, you may want to consider a car seat that will help keep your pet safe and secure. You can also use a crate.

Check with your veterinarian before traveling. Get any necessary vaccination and health records that you may need. If you are traveling out of the country, check to make sure you have the necessary records and quarantine information for that particular country. You may also want to have your vet provide tranquilizers for your pet if this is necessary.

When looking for a pet-friendly apartment to rent, the first thing to do is to check with the landlord regarding the regulations. Make sure to get permission for any pets that you have. Rules may include damage liability or health regulations, and some landlords do not allow pets at all.

Generally small dogs, cats, or birds are better suited in apartments for rent than other, larger, animals. However, you need to consider carefully which suits your lifestyle best.

Although some cats are perfectly happy indoors, many are still interested in the outdoors. For these cats, a ledge that is attached to the windowsill is a great idea as it allows them to see outside. Make sure that your cat has plenty of toys for exercise, like climbing structures that enable stalking, pouncing, or scratching.

Dogs also need exercise. It is best to choose apartments near walking paths or parks. This way, you can walk with your dog after he has been confined to the apartment all day.

Apartment living with pets has certain risks. Probably the biggest danger is the possibility of your pet falling from the balcony or out of a window. For this reason, apartments on the ground floor are safer.

Apartments without carpeting are best for pet-friendly living because carpets retain pet smells. Non-carpeted flooring is also easier to clean, should there be an accident.

Help your pet to adjust to a new home by taking a few days off when you move in. Your pet may be nervous in new surroundings and your presence will be comforting.

Most dog people want to keep their canine companion healthy and happy. We know that there is so much information out there about keeping our dogs healthy and we all try to keep up with that information. Whether you are a long-time dog person or a first-timer, here are a few tips that you can use to keep your furry friend healthy and happy for years to come.

Even though it seems logical to cut your dog’s hair in the summer to keep him comfortable, this may not be a good thing. In actuality, a dog’s fur will actually act as a coolant will help keep him cool during the hot weather. Additionally, if you cut his fur off, you run the risk of having him endure sunburn, which is a difficult condition to relieve or cure.

If you have a full-grown dog that weighs less than 20 pounds, he will need more calories than a larger dog. Choose a pet food specially designed for smaller canines to ensure that he is receiving the proper calorie intake. You can ask your veterinarian for recommendations.

If you find that your dog is becoming a picky eater, it may be due to the fact that you are changing his food too often. When you find a food that Fido enjoys, stick with it unless your dog’s vet makes a different recommendation for medical or health reasons.

Keep your dog away from your garden. Many plants such as spinach and tomatoes can be harmful to your pet.

Everything You Should Know About Your Pet’s Food

These days, food for just about any animal is available at a store. It’ll be at a pet store, a farm co-op, a grocer, or even a manufacturer with a retail outlet.

Remember the scandal with pet food not too long ago in which the manufacturers added something that was harmful to dogs? Millions of dollars were lost or spent in trying to right the situation, while a number of dogs actually died. Class action attorneys in Los Angeles and other firms like them had a heyday answering questions about claims against dog food companies.

One good way to ensure this never happens is to make your dog’s food at home. There are many good recipes online from people who feed their dogs no commercial foods whatsoever. They make meals that are nutritious for dogs, not just filling.

Find Recipes Online

Gluten-free recipes, grain-free recipes, and even weight-loss recipes can be found online, but make sure the recipe isn’t promoting homemade fillers. Nothing but meat, vegetables, and rice should be in them.

Here’s a good recipe, and you can change out the veggies for variety.

You will need the following:

  • 1 lb. ground meat (any kind)
  • A small package of frozen veggies (NOT corn!)
  • 1 cup of uncooked rice, cooked
  1. Brown the meat in a fry pan.
  2. While the meat is frying, cook the rice.
  3. When the meat has browned, add the veggies to get them warm.
  4. When the rice is done, fluff with a fork.
  5. Mix all the ingredients together.

All that’s left is to divide the food into portions appropriate for the dog’s size, and then store the rest.
